Case at a glance · United States

A U.S. composite-material manufacturer traced repeated orifice failures, premature pump wear and unstable cutting quality to hard feed water—and addressed the cause before it entered the ultra-high-pressure circuit.

01 · The Challenge

The Hidden Cost of Hard Water

The customer's waterjet cutting machine experienced repeated sapphire-orifice failures and unusually short service intervals for high-pressure seals, check valves and intensifier components.

At the cutting table, unstable pressure contributed to edge chipping, delamination and inconsistent results on expensive composite materials. After reviewing the operating environment, Yuanhong identified hard feed water as the common cause affecting both pump reliability and cut quality.

!Premature seal and check-valve wear
!Scale in internal water passages
!Chipping and delamination on composites

02 · The Science

How Hardness Minerals Affect an Ultra-High-Pressure System

Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. Under waterjet operating conditions, mineral deposits can form on valves and restricted flow passages, while suspended particles and scale increase abrasive wear on precision components.

Deposits can interfere with check-valve sealing and water flow. Downstream, contaminated feed water reaches the cutting head and can shorten the life of sapphire or diamond orifices while reducing jet consistency.

Important: The correct treatment method depends on a water analysis. Hardness, total dissolved solids, silica, chlorides, pH and other parameters should be evaluated before final system selection.

03 · The Solution

Conditioning the Water Before It Reached the Pump

Yuanhong integrated an industrial ion-exchange water softener matched to the customer's pump and feed-water conditions. The system reduces hardness by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions before water enters the high-pressure circuit.

01

Longer Orifice Service Life

Consistent softened feed water reduces mineral exposure at the cutting head and helps protect sapphire and diamond orifices.

02

Less Wear on Pump Components

Lower hardness reduces scale-related wear on cylinders, dynamic seals, check valves and restricted water passages.

03

More Stable Pressure Delivery

Cleaner internal passages and better valve sealing support consistent pump pressure during extended production runs.

04 · System Details

A Complete Feed-Water Treatment Package

The supplied system combines hardness treatment, water delivery, filtration and local controls into a practical package for integration ahead of the waterjet intensifier pump.

05 · The Impact

Improved Reliability and More Consistent Composite Cutting

Longer lifefor sapphire and diamond orifices
Less wearon seals, valves and intensifier components
Stable pressureduring extended cutting operation
Lower scrapthrough more consistent composite edge quality

After improving the incoming water quality, the customer reduced premature component replacement and unexpected maintenance interruptions. More stable pressure also improved edge consistency on high-value composite parts, helping reduce chipping, delamination and avoidable material loss.

Business takeaway: Water quality is not a utility detail—it is a core operating parameter that directly affects pump life, orifice life and cutting consistency.
